August- The Leaves Change

The month of August has passed us recently, and with that, the end of summer, and the arrival of Fall is imminent. Many changes are on the horizon within our environment. For one, the temperatures are slowly starting to drop, and eventually, the leaves will start to wither and die by the Will of Allah (SWT). Indeed, this is a time to reflect on the miracles and signs of Allah (SWT) to all of humanity. Fall is a time when the leaves from the trees start to change colors, fall, and die. It is also a time when many plants, which came to life in Spring, and lived through the Summer, begin to wither and die as well. However, despite the fact that the leaves and plants are dead and missing in Fall and Winter, they seem to come back to life in the Spring, and the cycle of life and death continues. This physical reminder of life and death and life again is a reminder to all people of faith and people of observation which pairs well with the 28th ayat of Surah al Baqarah, which states,

“How can you disbelieve in Allah? Seeing that you were dead and he gave you life. Then he will give you death then again will bring you to life (on the day of Resurrection) and then unto him you will return” (2:28)

It is clear that while this ayat does pertain to us humans specifically, this point of life and death is not lost even if we do not talk about humans, as we can see this with the trees and the leaves and plants that come to life every Spring after being dead for Winter, and then they die again in Fall, and the cycle continues. SubhanAllah, everything is possible in the hands of Allah!

Da’wah Activities

With the arrival of September and Fall, that also means that school is about to begin if it has not already. So with that, now is a good time to review what has been done by MUNA Youth in the last month of Summer so we can get an idea of what to do for next Summer, and also to highlight some great Da’wah activities conducted by MUNA Youth. First to the Da’wah towards our youth.

On the 7th and 8th of August, MUNA Youth brothers from the New York North Zone conducted a Youth Education Session which was intended to inculcate participants with the idea of connecting the MUNA Constitution and the Ideals of MUNA to our communities. In addition to that, Brother Harun Ar-Rashid, the National President of MUNA, addressed the gathering to further emphasize the grand scale of MUNA Youth and MUNA as a whole. In addition to the more academic aspects of the gathering, there were some opportunities for the participants to tour Masjid Ar-Rayyan, specifically the backyard, educational library, amongst other spaces therein. InshAllah, a time will come when more people can have access to these facilities and these resources and make use of them in a way which allows them to get closer to Allah and to Jannah as a result. Of course, any session or activity done by MUNA ought to be replete with fun activities which ignite the child in us, and also help us to recall and remember the points made in the discussions, and also fill our stomachs at the end of it all, and this gathering had no less than that! The participants played a game of Jeopardy which was used to recall the points made in the educational part of the program, and help them remember the points for later use in a practical application. In terms of fun activities, there was an ice breaker session, as well as a session of Fun Box, which is an Islamic board game featuring aspects of Jeopardy, Charades, and Taboo. In addition to that, There were also games of Tug of war, and Body Slam, which is a game played to push an opponent out of a ring using only one leg. All this was bookended by food from Sagar Halal Chinese Restaurant.

On the 13th of August, the youth of New York South Zone’s Ozone Park Chapter gathered with their parents and other elders of their communities in Ozone Park’s Baitul Noor Masjid to have a valuable discussion on the importance of being involved with the activities of MUNA Youth. The brothers had the opportunity to listen to testimonials from their fellow youth in their community in regards to what MUNA Youth is to them, and how it has changed them and their lives. The attendees were also fortunate to have our beloved Ustadh Abu Samiha Sirajul Islam, National Assistant Executive Director, Ahmad Abu Ubayda deliver words of wisdom and advice to them pertaining to why it is very beneficial and essential for the youth to become involved with the activities of MUNA Youth. Also, NY South Zone Youth Director Br. Samsuj Zaman gave a talk on the ‘Importance of Youth’s time and the best way to utilize it’. Alhamdulillah, this program has produced a commitment from fifteen youth to join their local subchapter. In addition to this Da’wah to our youth, there was also dawah done towards the wider community and towards non-Muslims as well, with great benefits, Alhamdulillah!

On the 12th to 15th of August, the Da’wah department of New Jersey North’s Masjid Adam had collaborated with WhyIslam and Grassroots Dawah to give dawah to participants of the 2021 Passaic County Fair. By the Grace of Allah and by their efforts, they were able to have over 30 volunteers help out over 4 days, thousands of candies and sweets were distributed, over 800 Qur’ans were distributed in English, Spanish, and Bangla, as well as 4000+ Islamic flyers and literature were distributed. But most importantly perhaps, was the fact that 4 people had accepted Islam as their way of life, as they took the shahadah!

National Youth Leadership Camp

On the 20th to 22nd of August, MUNA youth leaders from across the country congregated in Camp Oswego in Windsor, New York in the National Youth Leadership camp of 2021. Many of the Delegates of the camp are Presidents of their local subchapter, while many others are secretaries, in addition to other people who are responsible in their own subchapters and beyond. In the camp, delegates took the time to learn from elders and from each other in regards to how to better serve the supporters and participants who come to the local subchapters and to MUNA in general in search of help with their growth and development as Muslims, and as human beings in general. It is important to note that many of the things learned from the camp are then implemented into the subchapter, and with all that is learned from camp, it will make for a better local subchapter, and a better MUNA at large in the future!

Sha'ban - A Preparation for Blessed Ramadan

March Newsletter

We are currently in the middle of Sha’ban, which is the month that precedes Ramadan in the Islamic Calendar. Sha’ban is a month which has tremendous blessings. The reason why Sha’ban is a month of such blessing is because the deeds that we do for the entire year get sent up in the middle of this month to be accounted and put into our records. It is also a month that Allah bestows on his believes significant rewards as well as be forgiven for their wrongdoings.

According to a hadith recorded in At-Tabarani, Abu Thalabah Al Khushny reported that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, “Allah (SWT) looks down on the night in the middle of Sha’ban, and forgives the believes, prolongs the hope for the disbelievers, and leaves away the people of grudge to their grudge until they forsake it.”

It is clear from this hadith that this month is definitely a month where there are tremendous blessings in store for those who have iman. How do we make sure that we can derive the maximum benefit from this blessed month?

We must make sure that we hold no grudges or anger towards anybody, otherwise Allah (SWT) will not grant forgiveness for the sins that we commit, as stated in the hadith above. In addition to that, the answer to the question is further detailed in a hadith recorded in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

Aisha (RA) narrated, “I never saw the messenger of Allah (SAW) fast for a complete month except for the month of Ramadan, and I never saw him fast in a month more than he did in the month of Sha’ban.”

The biggest means by which we can receive rewards, blessings, and forgiveness in this month is if we do sawm (fasting), especially in the 3 days in the middle of the month, which are on the 26th, 27th, and 28th of March for the year 2021. However, that is not the only way that a person gains rewards from this month, although it is the most ideal. According to a hadith also recorded in Sahih Bukhari and Muslim:

Narrated by Aisha (RA), “The prophet (SAW) never fasted voluntarily in any month more than in the month of Sha’ban. He used to say, ‘do those deeds which you can do easily, as Allah (SWT) will not get tired (of giving rewards) till you get bored and tired (of performing ibadah).’ The most beloved prayer in the eyes of the prophet (SAW) was the one that was done regularly (throughout the life) even if it were little. And whenever the prophet (SAW) offered a prayer, he used to offer it regularly.”

While it is certainly most beneficial for us to fast in this month, we should strive to also do good deeds which are frequent and consistent, even if they are relatively small. In that manner, we can derive the benefits in the month of Sha’ban, and be ready for the month of Ramadan and beyond! Let us make our best efforts with the rest of this month and Ramadan, and the months thereafter, by the will of Allah (SWT)!
